Driver Airbag
The good news is that there have only been 110 Elantra models affected. However, it is a serious recall, and you should have your vehicle repaired as soon as possible if you find out yours is included. So far, only a single Hyundai Sonata Hybrid model has been affected.
This recall went out in December of 2016 when Hyundai determined that the driver’s airbag may not fully inflate in the event of a crash. This is thought to be due to a faulty end seal inside the driver-side airbag inflator, which may have been improperly installed during manufacturing.
Further investigation showed that the airbag may be missing a chemical enhancer that is required for the airbag to complete the second stage of deployment.
Under normal circumstances in a crash, the primary stage involves the initial deployment of the airbag itself. In the second and most-critical stage, a chemical enhancer allows the airbag to inflate. With this particular recall, the defect may prevent the driver-side airbag from completing its second stage.
Hyundai is offering to replace the driver-side airbag module on all affected vehicles at no charge.
