The average number of safety recalls compared to the number of cars sold in the U.S. is actually fairly low. The rate in America between 2013 and 2017 was 0.79 recalls for every 100,000 vehicles sold. The 2014 Ford Focus, however, is a little above average.

How many recalls have been issued against the 2014 Ford Focus?

The NHTSA has issued a total of 12 safety recalls against the 2014 Ford Focus.

Some of those recalls include:

  • Sudden loss of power
  • Engine stalling due to wiring splices
  • Doors unexpectedly opening

Sudden Loss of Motive Power

NHTSA Recall ID: 13V523000

The powertrain control module (PCM) is the computerized “brain” of all modern cars. A software issue with this module can cause major problems. In the 2014 Ford Focus, this issue caused a stall-like condition due to faulty signals emitting from the PCM.

Fixing the issue requires a software “flash” at an authorized Ford dealership.

Engine Wiring Splices Cause Engine to Stall

NHTSA Recall ID: 14V495000

This recall only impacts the 2014 Ford Focus ST trim, with the 2.0-liter engine. This problem was caused by the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) module sensor reading inputs incorrectly, due to a wiring harness being crimped.

The engine wiring harness was therefore sending bad signals to the powertrain control module via the MAP. The bad signals could cause the engine to stall.

Ford corrects this issue by replacing the crimped wiring harness with new wires, at no cost.

Missing Ball Bearings in the Steering Gears

NHTSA Recall ID: 14V514000

A certain number of 2014 Ford Focus vehicles were assembled with steering gears that didn’t have ball bearings in them. This could cause a serious loss of steering control in the vehicle.

Ford reinstalls the steering gears with the proper ball bearings to correct this issue, free of charge.

Cracked Fuel Delivery Module

NHTSA Recall ID: 14V525000

A vehicle’s fuel delivery module (FDM) is a part located between the fuel filter’s body and its cap. In some 2014 Ford Focus vehicles manufactured in May of 2014, the FDM was cracked, which caused low fuel pressure in the engine. This could cause the engine to stall and lead to a crash.

Ford corrects this issue for owners by replacing the fuel delivery module, at no cost.

Fuel Pump Installed with Improper Plating

NHTSA Recall ID: 15V005000

More than 50,000 2014 Ford Focuses and other Ford-manufactured vehicles were manufactured with faulty fuel pumps. The internal components of the fuel pump did not have the proper nickel plating on them. This resulted in fuel pump failure, which leads to the engine stalling.

Ford corrects this issue by installing a new fuel pump in the impacted vehicles, free of charge.

Engine Wiring Splices Cause Engine to Stall

NHTSA Recall ID: 15V813000

This issue is identical to the wiring harness safety recall listed above. It only affected the 2014 Ford Focus ST trim. Ford identified an additional 9,000 vehicles that it added to the list that needed a new wiring harness installed.

Ford corrected this issue, once again, by replacing the crimped wiring harness with a new one, at no cost to owners.

Doors Unexpectedly Opening

NHTSA Recall ID: 16V643000

One of the components in the door latches of the 2014 Ford Focus was poorly manufactured. That component could break, causing a door to pop open while the vehicle is in motion. This recall impacted more than two million Ford vehicles.

Ford corrects the issue by replacing the faulty door latches free of charge. Unfortunately, this didn’t fix the issue, and it led to another recall which is described below.

Hatchback Can be Unlatched with One Button Press

NHTSA Recall ID: 16V698000

2014 Ford Focus Open Hatchback

The Body Control Module (BCM) in 2014 Ford Focus hatchback modules was programmed to allow the hatchback to pop open with a single button press. This could cause the driver to inadvertently open the hatchback while the car is in motion. Safety regulations require that it takes more than a single button press to open a hatchback.

Ford corrects this issue with a software flash, conducted free of charge to owners.

Convenience Charge Cord May Overheat, Causing a Fire

NHTSA Recall ID: 18V592000

This recall affected nearly 50,000 2014 Ford Focus Electric Vehicles. The 120V Convenience Charge Cords were assembled without thermistors in them. This can cause the charge cords to overheat and catch on fire.

Ford corrects this safety issue by replacing the faulty cords with new ones that have working thermistors installed. The replacement is free at an authorized Ford dealership.

Stuck Canister Purge Valve

NHTSA Recall ID: 18V735000

This was a potentially major issue for about 1.2 million 2014 Ford Focus vehicles. The Canister Purge Valve could malfunction due to a faulty signal from the Power Control Module. If the Canister Purge Valve became stuck, it could create an intense vacuum inside the fuel system.

This had the potential to damage the fuel tank, fuel delivery module, and carbon canister.

Ford corrects this issue by reprogramming the Powertrain Control Module. The vehicle will also be inspected, and if necessary, Ford will replace the fuel tank, fuel delivery module, and carbon canister if they’ve been damaged. All repairs are free of charge for owners.

Stuck Canister Purge Valve

NHTSA Recall ID: 19V515000

An additional 57,000 of the 2014 Ford Focus ST trim models were identified with the same Canister Purge Valve issue described above. Ford remedies this issue once again with a software reprogram, as well as replacement of any parts that have been damaged.

Doors Unexpectedly Opening

NHTSA Recall ID: 20V331000

All of the vehicles that were repaired in Recall #: 16V643000, described above, were recalled again in June of 2020. The repairs were not installed correctly the first time, so the exact same vehicles were recalled for the exact same issue.

Ford corrects this issue by replacing the door latch components again.
