2012 Hyundai Sonata

The 2012 Hyundai Sonata is an efficient, comfortable mid-size with excellent crash test ratings. It’s also too old to be worth purchasing in 2022. If you can find one in mint condition, that’s a whole different story, but don’t hold your breath on that happening.

  • Seatbelt and airbag failure resulting from software bugs is the 2012 Hyundai Sonata‘s most worrying issue.
  • Engine stall has become more common in recent years, maybe owing to a faulty fuel pump, but often owing to simple wear and tear.
  • 291 steering complaints suggest that the steering column coupler is the first major part to go bad.
  • The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration awarded the 2012 Sonata five stars overall, including five stars for rollover, while the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the car a Top Safety Pick.
  • A 2012 Hyundai Sonata would have been a great purchase five or six years ago, but the car’s age combined with the toll taken by multiple previous owners make it a poor choice of used car in 2022.

Seatbelt and Airbag Complaints Persist After Five Recalls

The 2012 Hyundai Sonata has had issues with the crash response system from the very start. In 2012, just under 30,000 Sonatas were recalled for curtain airbags deploying for no reason. In 2017, nearly one million Sonatas were recalled for detached seat belt linkages.

Another half million or so were recalled later that same year for the same issue, and, finally, there was recall for disabled airbags and seatbelts in another half million Sonatas in 2018. The issue in this final recall had to do with software bugs in the airbag control unit.

Despite all of these recalls, the car continues to generate its share of airbag and seatbelt complaints. To take one example from late 2022, a driver had a head-on crash with a deer at 63 miles per hour. The airbag sensor detached from the vehicle on impact and the airbags did not deploy.

There are also complaints for airbag warning lights staying on for no reason, and difficulties getting the replacement parts for the above-listed recalls. If you don’t want to get put on a waiting list, check the VIN before you buy, and make sure the repairs have already been taken care of.

Engine Stall May Owe to a Missed Fuel Pump Recall, or Simple Wear and Tear

Engines take a significant lead among the 2012 Hyundai Sonata’s 1,317 driver complaints, accounting for 452 reports in total. Complaints range from knocking noises to inexplicable limp mode and sudden failure, but engine stall stands as the most common cause for concern.

A recall was issued in 2018 for a high pressure fuel pump leak. The high pressure pump is the part tasked with administering fuel into the combustion system. If this part is damaged and leaking, you’re going to have a major fire hazard under the hood with fuel dripping all over the place, and you’re going to have engine stall.

Some of the complaints on file point in the direction of this recall, with drivers reporting that they’ve had trouble claiming the free repairs from their local dealers. There are also reports of drivers who never received a recall notification experiencing high pressure pump failure.

Given the car’s age, there are bound to be at least a few instances of engine and powertrain failure that come down to simple wear and tear. Many drivers are reporting breakdowns well past the 100,000 mile mark, and, while the Sonata can be reliable, it takes fastidious maintenance to hit that quarter million.

Worn Out Steering Gears May Leave You Wobbling All Over the Road

With 291 complaints on file, steering problems take second place behind engine issues, with drivers reporting loose steering mechanisms and clicking noises when turning. These issues typically point to worn out steering column couplers, and that’s usually what complainants discover when they take it into the shop.

The steering column coupler is one of the gears used in a rack-and-pinion steering system, and perhaps the most important one, as it’s the gear that transfers a turn from the steering wheel into the steering rack. Without it, your best bet at making a turn is to lean really hard in the direction you want to go.

There have been no steering-related recalls for the 2012 Sonata, and there have been no investigations into the matter. After a decade on the road you can expect some wear and tear to the steering system, but you probably don’t expect the whole system to go out at under 200,000 miles.

Be that as it may, a good majority of these complaints were registered in the last few years, suggesting that it may not be a manufacturing issue but a matter of multiple owners putting the steering gears through the ringer. All you can do as a buyer is feel it out on the test drive.

You Could do Worse Than a Used 2012 Hyundai Sonata, but Good Luck Finding One in Great Condition

The Hyundai Sonata is a daily-driver, an affordable, easy-to-maintain mid-size that sips gas like it’s saving some for later. It attracts drivers who might not be all that into cars in the first place, and just need something they can drive to work and not have to worry about.

That means that it attracts a type of driver who might be lax about maintenance, and who might not have the best driving habits. When you combine that with the car’s age and 1,317 complaints, you’ve got a good car that’s past its prime.

Poor visibility, front and back.
When we shopped for a new car, I was not allowed to sit in the front seat, let alone drive the car. The salesman sat in front with my husband driving. After we bought the car, when I finally drove it, I found the visibility is poor for a shorter person, the seats feel like you are sitting on the floor and the rear view mirror is hard to set for my height. As a passenger in the front seat, I have a hard time getting out of the front passenger seat. Just not fond of this car, but we own it and cannot afford a car right now.

Engine recall for 2012 Hyundai sonata.
The biggest concern I have with the 2012 Hyundai sonata is the fact that there is a major recall on the engine for all models made within this year. While the Hyundai company does fully replace the engine and provide a rental car until the fix is made, they only replace it with a refurbished engine, so it is likely that the engine will break again.

This vehicle is the first one I have had.
About a year ago, I needed to get my engine replaced and I did not get my car back for months, and it is still not completely fixed. It also had a recall either for its seatbelts or airbags. The air in the car stopped working for a while and whenever the car was stationary it would be unbearably hot in the car.

It is junk and I should have made them replace it when the engine first seized.
It was a recalled car and needed the new engine replaced because a piece was missing that properly filtered oil through the engine. The car seized more than once and then the engine was on backorder for months. I was very disappointed because the car wasn't fixed properly and had to be taken back for more work.

Will not buy another Hyundai sonata in the future.
Because of a factory default, my engine seized without warning. Thank goodness Hyundai gave my car a new one at no cost to us but I have been really unsure I feel safe with this car anymore. I am not sure how much longer I will keep this one but I do know I do not want a Hyundai in the future.

Do not buy a 2012 Hyundai Sonata- save yourself the headache.
Electrical issues with tail lights and headlights. Plastic parts that tend to break and are placed I. Difficult to maneuver areas requiring professional and costly replacement. For example, a bunion in the steering column wore out. The part itself is 1. 98, labor 400. 00. Money pit.

A car that just keeps digging into your pockets.
Vehicle has had a lot of recalls with poor manufacturing specifically the engine. There is a class action lawsuit pending over the vehicle. Lots of money for upkeep and maintenance. The car however looks nice, but is just a hassle. I personally will never buy a Hyundai again.

This car has been cheaply produced and led to many accidents and recalls.
This car has to many recalls and does not feel safe anymore. We have experienced 3 significant recalls. The features are totally outdated. The engine has since been replaced through one of these recalls and now the brakes need changing. It has become a potential death trap.

Engine and everything else problems.
Burns oil constantly need money sunk in it horrible. Finding a replacement engine didn't fix the oil burning problem. The car is cute but nothing seems to make any sense. To change your turn signal bulb it instructs you to go through the wheel well. Just off the way stuff.

Deception
My Sonata 2012 was the 4th Hyundai I bought. It's been a money pit. Had to have the ball joints and stabilizer bars repaired many times. I don't know if it is because we have harsh winters. First time ever I got so many troubles with a Huyndai. Won't buy another one.

I have had a lot of problems with my vehicle since I bought it.
There is always something wrong with it. Every time I change the brake light it goes out within 2 weeks it never last. I think the car sits to low. I have new tires and it still does not drive smoothly. It makes noises when I drive like the car is falling apart.

Will never buy a Hyundai again.
I have had problems with my vehicle & Hyundai since the day I bought it. There have been so many recalls, my engine went out & it took several months to get repaired, everything on the inside is falling apart- it is been the worst car I have ever owned.

The recall edition that includes the engine.
My Hyundai has had way too many recalls since I purchased it. The recalls started the first year that I had it and have not stopped since. I really do not understand all the recalls on a new car that also had an engine recall this year.

2012 Sonata issues
I've had brake light issues, bulb and harness problems, brake problems, interior electrical malfunctions and I am currently waiting for a recall to be initiated for air bags. The steering is too sensitive.

2012 Hyundai sonata 2.4 gls.
Had vehicle for 5 years, bought when 3 years old used. Vehicle performed well, until one day the engine gave out in me while driving. Turned out it was an manufactured problem and the engine was recalled.

Quality control meets cheaply manufactured.
I used to own the v-6 version of the Hyundai Sonata; they discontinued this and made the same vehicle a 4-cylinder. It is a poorly designed car whose quality has suffered; I will not buy another one.

Run do not buy a Honda especially at 2012.
Iv had 16 safety recalls on it. My engine melted it is self while I was driving it just died on me at an intersection. Electrical issues with all lights replace bulbs often like every 2 months.
accountCircle Daryl R on December 3, 2022
I would not purchase again.
I have had the motor replaced, the cruise control quit working, and the paint peeled all before the warranty expired. I still would not recommend purchasing a Hyundai sonata.
accountCircle Brittany F on December 3, 2022
Please have brakes fully checked if purchasing used.
Many issues with brake pads since it was purchased. I do believe this is specific to this particular vehicle and not the sonata as a whole.
accountCircle Shawn H on December 3, 2022
Engine will blow if you do not adhere to the recall.
Most major issue that I have had with my car was a manufacturing defect in which the engine was recalled and had to be replaced.

The AC doesn't work well when on eco mode
AC sucks. The steering wheel is peeling.
