You could do a lot worse than the 2012 Chevrolet Cruze if you’re shopping for a ten year old car. But, compartment fires and airbag failure have persisted despite recalls, and brake failure reports haven’t even led to a recall in the first place. Combine that with the car’s age and a 2012 Cruze is a hard sell.

  • The 2012 Chevrolet Cruze earned a Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and five stars overall from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
  • There have been two recalls for fires, but complaints of smoking under the hood persist a decade later.
  • Drivers report airbags failing to deploy even after three recalls.
  • Braking issues range from total failure to stiff brake assist.
  • At present, the NHTSA reports seven recalls, 812 complaints, and three investigations on file for the 2012 Cruze.

Compartment Fires Persist a Decade After Recalls

A pair of recalls were issued for potential fire hazards within the first year of the 2012 Cruze’s release. In the first instance, covering over 53,000 units, both 2011 and 2012 Cruzes, the fuel tank was liable to come loose in a crash. In the second, internal oil spills could cause fires in over 400,000 units.

There are currently 37 complaints on file for engine cooling, with many of these pointing to overheating and smoke coming from under the hood, often filling up the cabin and forcing drivers to pull over. These issues are sometimes accompanied by rough shifting, sputtering, or engine fires.

In affected units, drivers are typically reporting antifreeze spills as the root cause, meaning that oil spillage was not the only issue that needed to be addressed under the hood. An investigation into the issue actually led to Chevrolet paying out to 23 drivers, but the problem itself persists in many units.

Failure mileage is usually reported before the Cruze reaches 100,000 miles. If you want to chance it, the odds are that if you’re test-driving a car with 120,000 miles on the odometer and you’re not seeing any white smoke, you’re in the clear. The question is if you want to chance it.

Airbag Failure Leads to Three Recalls, Several Complaints

Three recalls were issued between 2012 and 2014 for failure to deploy in the frontal driver side airbag. In total, nearly 40,000 Chevrolet and Buick drivers were sent notifications regarding these recalls. In affected units, the issue came down to a shorting bar which could come in contact with the airbag terminal, preventing deployment.

In other words: it was a wiring issue. When the wrong wires and terminals come into contact with each other, you get electrical shorts. When you get electrical shorts, you get electrical components not working as they’re intended to work.

While complaints have not exactly been frequent since these recalls were issued, they’re not unheard of, either. A driver complains in late 2021 of total airbag failure after hitting a deer at 60 mph. In 2020, a driver reports the airbags not deploying after rear-ending a vehicle at 45 mph.

Most likely, you’ll get a “service airbag” light blinking on, with one driver reporting that the repairs eventually cost them $950 in 2016, which you can adjust for inflation to a little over a thousand bucks today. On the upside, there are only 34 airbag complaints on file with the NHTSA, so rate of incidence is low.

Reports of Brake Failure Have Gone Unaddressed

There are currently 138 complaints on file with the NHTSA for service brakes, with the most worrying complaints pointing to total failure when pressing down on the brake pedal. In some instances the pedal may go stiff, and in others, it may simply be completely unresponsive.

One driver reports that their brakes work perfectly fine in drive, but when they go into reverse, the brakes simply do not work at all. This isn’t the most common issue to encounter, but it is possible to produce this effect by using your brake and gas pedal at the same time, creating a low vacuum.

Some drivers are not experiencing total brake failure, but stiffness or weakness on the part of the power assist. Meaning that they can bring the car to a stop, but only by applying extra effort. This can be a problem when you need to come to a sudden halt.

There have been no recalls issued to address the brake issues reported in the 2012 Chevrolet Cruze, and there have been no investigations into the matter. All you can really do as a buyer is make sure to check the brakes on the test drive.

There are Worse Cars Than the 2012 Chevrolet Cruze, but Unaddressed Braking and Fire Issues are Worrying

2012 Chevrolet Cruze

The 2012 Cruze earned a Top Safety Pick award with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and five stars overall from the NHTSA. With proper maintenance, there’s no reason a ten year old Cruze can’t go another five years or more.

But, when something does go wrong, it’s usually pretty serious. Compartment fires, brake failure, airbag failure, this isn’t a busted window switch or a loose panel, these are potentially catastrophic problems. While the rate of incidence isn’t incredibly high, the risk of your car catching on fire may be too much for some buyres.

Engine/valve issues in 2012 Cruze
Bought this car used with 112k miles but inspected by a mechanic. A year after I bought it the oil pan had an issue that lost all the oil, which caused a blown head gasket. Had to replace the engine. The new engine had a valve cover leak, replaced the valve cover with a brand new valve cover from the Chevrolet dealership warehouse, 4 months later the valve cover went bad and had to buy another valve cover. The issue from the valve cover caused so much heat under the hood I had to replace broken plastic parts to the thermostat housing and hoses. With the second new valve cover I now have issues with the valve seal leaking into my spark plug wells. The buying price on the car was $16,000. Repairs and parts due to engine problems has cost about $3000 in less than 2 years.

Fed up with constant repairs since day one.
Overheats a lot replaced thermostat several times. Thermostat does not last even the ones from Chevy dealer and the more expensive brand. Turbos goes out after vehicle is about 5 years old. Have replaced valve cover gaskets and head gaskets a few times to stop oil leaking but that only last about 7 months then have to do it again. I would not recommend buying a Cruze to my friends and family with the 1.4 liter motor I have had nothing but problems with it.

2012 Chevy Cruze Transmission issues
The main issue I have had with my Cruze is when it was 5,000 miles over warranty (105,000) the transmission gave out and it costs me almost 3,000 dollars to fix. (I'm still paying on my car) The other issue I have with it, like most newer cars, the body is not strong and dents and scratches easily. The plastic body/bumper is not something I like. I had a small bump up with a girl on an older car and her car had a small scratch. My whole bumper bent.

Blue 2012 Chevy Cruze with a few mechanical issues.
When I bought my Cruze, I didn't have it more than a week before I had to take it back to the dealership, they had it for a month before I got it back. I have had it for 2 years and have issues with Low Engine Power, and traction issues. These have been a problem since I got the car and when I took it to the dealership they couldn't tell me what was wrong. I don't think I will buy a Cruise again although I love the Chevy brand.

2012 Chevy Cruze leaves a lot to be desired.
It accelerates slower than other cars I have driven. There seems to be something going wrong with the water pump or engine at least every 6 months to a year. The headroom in the front seat is inadequate, as I am 5’4” mad my head is within 2 inches of touching the roof. Unless the seat is in the lowest position, IN risk knocking myself in the head getting into the car. Overall, I definitely would not buy this car again.

Do not buy it unless you want to be fixing the car almost every year!
I hate my Chevy Cruze the reason is because I own this vehicle since December 2014 and it already broke the gasket 3 times! It is always something with the gasket! I am so tired of it! I do not recommend Chevy Cruze! If you want a vehicle that last longer and does not give you so many issues do not buy this one! Also is too small if you have kids not a family car. I regret buying it!

Nightmare cat from hell!!
I have replaced just about everything on this car. It is currently in the shop to have $1500 in repairs done for the catalytic converters (there are 2 of them). I have probably put $3000+ into this vehicle in the last year.. I still have it because I paid to much for it and cannot afford the down payment required to trade it in.

Do not buy a 2012 Chevy Cruze.
Lots of problems. No cruise control, need a new timing belt after 65,000 miles, defroster does not work, need to fix front flex pipe, bad transmission. All these things were like this either when I purchased the vehicle or happened not long after. Would not recommend this car to any of my friends or anyone for that matter.

Multiple repairs after only 5 years of driving.
Have had to replace several parts of the engine. There are noted about 15-20 parts that were on recall. There is a reason they no longer make this vehicle. I have had the vehicle paid off for about 1.5 years, however, I've spent another $2000.00 in repairs. I'm planning to sell it before more into it then what it's worth.

Problems with the Chevy Cruze 2012
The thief system acts up a lot. The car is not good on gas because when I put a full tank in it is gone by the end up the week when my traveling distance does not exceed over 100 miles. This would not be my first choice if I were getting another car and would invest my money into a better car.

Chevy Cruze: a bigger turd than the one in grandmas depends right now
Completely unreliable and the parts aren't necessarily cheap. Front window fogs up constantly for no reason. Terribly low resale value (because of how unreliable they are) Problems with engine temperature sensor. Uncomfortable seats. Takes forever for the heater to warm-up or ac to cool down.

With the Chevy Cruze there was a big turbo malfunction.
I haven’t had the car long and the turbo is messing up bad which cost a good amount for a new one. I went on a trip and barely made it back. Out of nowhere it stopped going at good speeds. The there was a oil leak. At some points it would take awhile just to get the speed to 2 mph.

I am reviewing the 2012 Chevrolet Cruze lt. Review is honest and not full of fluff.
My car has had many recalls and things go wrong. It has needed lots of maintenance and upkeep when it was supposed to be an easy upkeep vehicle. A car seat does not fit in the back seat comfortably. I would not purchase again if I knew I would have the issues that I do.

Concerned about reliability.
Worried about the reliability of my vehicle since there were so many recalls after I bought it. Had to make repairs already because of a flaw in design. Sometimes it does not accelerate properly and in the past it suddenly lost power when I was on the freeway.

Is the Chevy Cruze worth it or not.
I have had many problems with this car. The transmission went out. I had to replace the clutch and the water pump. I have also had to replace the thermostat & housing twice. All this in the 2 and half years I have had it.
accountCircle Stephanie C on December 3, 2022
Our 2012 Cruze has been a lemon!
We have had to replace the water pump 3 different times, the vacuum pump 3 times, the rotors before 30, 000 miles, it has idling issues and misses. And we've had the head gasket cover replaced 4 or more times.

That it leaks antifreeze and oil;
It has leaked antifreeze since I have owned it. And it leaks oil and the car is horrible made. And this means I will never purchase an American car again.

Do not purchase this car, go for something else.
Mechanical issues with the stabilitrak and the traction control after buying 2-3 months in. Luckily had warranty, if not it would of been a lot to cover.

That overheating issues on the car happens way to often.
I don't like that it has a large blind spot. It doesn't have a trunk opening button in the car. And it overheats and has cooling issues too frequently.
accountCircle Lupe N on December 3, 2022
Lots of issues.
Lots of technical issues. Especially with the engine. Overheats really easily and engine makes weird noises. Always needs to be maintained constantly.
accountCircle Linda B on December 3, 2022
You will be taking it into the shop for repairs frequently. My car has had quite a few recall notices on it as well as other more costly things happening to it.
I dislike that it doesn't have much get-up-and-go when speeding up.There is also something breaking down in it about every 6 months.
